Notes on glass I love glass. I love rocks. I particularly love geods which for me signify/exemplify the geological evolution/history of earth. Geods with their infinite arrangements of crystals and subtle colorations evoke mysterious transformation. These processes occurred over millions of years, which for me adds to the fascination. I have chosen to incorporate geods in my stained glass panels thereby continuing the transformation process. In an apocryphal story, the Egyptians are credited with having “invented/discovered” glass, perhaps because the earliest glass artifacts found are Egyptian. As a result of their fires, perhaps some silicates melted, along with traces of copper and/or iron producing the first stained glass. In my slumped glass pieces I try to translate/suggest the feeling of fossils. The images are subtle, sometimes merely suggestions. I create clay forms by etching images or pressing actual objects into the clay. The glass is placed on the mold and fired/slumped to 1350-1400 degrees Fahrenheit. Melting glass returns it to its original form in order to transform it. |
